The Hedland Flow Meter is a variable area instrument (rotameter). A precision machined orifice with sharp edges is located in the piston assembly and forms an annular orifice with the preformed metering cone. The piston assembly carries a cylindrical PPS/ceramic magnet magnet magnetically coupled to an external current indicator that moves accurately, in direct response to piston movement. A calibrated spring counteracts flow in a forward direction.

This spring reduces viscosity sensitivity and allows the flowmeter to be used in any position, including inverted.
